Some think Richard Williams the son of a Louisiana sharecroper is crazy! Some think Richard Williams has a great tennis mind for the way he honed the skills of his teenage daughters tennis games! Mr. Williams was oft mocked the last couple of weeks since he proudly fore told of an all Williams family final in the US open! Well, he was 50% right, the younger half of the Williams team, did indeed reach the finals of the 1999 US Open! And to the surprise of many, she beat the number 1 womens player in the world, Martina Hingis. Serena Williams was the first black to win the US Open, since Arthur Ashe did in 1968. How appropriate she did it on the court named for one of the most graceful US atheletes to ever win a US Open. She was only the second black female to win the US Open as well. Althea Gibson, the great female star of the 50's won back to back Opens in the late 50's! Serena all of 17, has power serves that register over 100 miles per hour! Some male pros don't hit their serves that hard! She and her sister Venus do not look like your average female tennis pros. They have that sleek Jaguar look of a well conditioned black athelete like a Michael Jordan. Both Williams girls wore their hair in beads the past two weeks of the US Open. They both shined or glistened as their well conditioned muscular bodies worked up sweats in the humid air of Flushing Meadows in Queens! Their arms are very muscular, as are their shoulders. They are also very muscular in their thighs from years of honing tennis skills under the care of their father Richard Williams. They both bring a power game to the world of tennis that unlike many of their competitors, doesn't come from just using high tech racquets! These girls are world class ATHELETES, and just looking at them compared to the other female pros, you see THE DIFFERENCE! Two beautiful young black women, taking the world of tennis by storm while their proud father makes comments which make some flinch in the halls of the USTA. When he said an opponent on the court against one of his daughters looked like a white turkey, many called him a reverse racist! When he said he was buying the the billion dollar Rockerfeller center, many said he was nuts! When he bragged 2 weeks ago, THIS WILL BE AN ALL WILLIAMS FINAL, some in the know said he might just be right... And now his 17 year old smiling child has indeed won THE BIG ONE! Serena and the rest of the Williams at one time lived in the ghetto of Los Angeles called Compton. Serena just received a check for $750,000.00 from Chase Bank for winning the 1999 US Open. She aspires to be a fashion designer, if she and her sister Venus keep winning majors, they very well may earn enough for their family to put a down paymnet on Rockerfeller center! And if you ask me, some of the other white female pros, do look as awkward as TURKEYS, trying to return power serves over 100 MPH! The Williams now live on a 10 Acre estate in Palm Beach Gardens in Florida. Exactly what the American dream was meant to be, that is the story of Serena, Venus and Richard Williams. No matter your color, or how poor your family was a generation ago, you have UNLIMITED EARNING CAPACITY in the US. Just ask Oprah, Michael and Tiger.... Of course Serena first thanked GOD when a microphone was placed in front her... A nice touch....
