Jets in Miami, L.A. Cut Short Flights

A United Airlines jet on its way to Hawaii returned to Los Angeles after an engine lost power, while a cross-country American Airlines jet made an emergency landing in Tampa, Fla., after a suspicious odor was reported.

No one was injured.

The United Boeing 747, carrying 430 passengers, was 20 minutes into its flight Sunday when a cockpit light indicated compressor failure. The pilot shut off the engine and returned to Los Angeles International Airport.

Passengers were to take other flights, while the plane was to be inspected.

The Miami-Los Angeles American Airlines flight on Saturday night turned back after an hour in the air. Television reports said smoke was smelled, but American Airlines spokeswoman Ana Jordan would not say what the problem was.

The flight was delayed more than eight hours before continuing. It landed safely Sunday.
